About
Exa is a search engine designed for AI agents rather than people: it returns clean page content instead of a list of ads and links. The official Exa MCP server gives an assistant real-time web search.
Tools:
- web_search_exa — searches the web and returns the most relevant results with extracted text.
- web_fetch_exa — fetches a specific URL and returns its readable content.
More tools (code search, company and people research, deep research) can be enabled through the server's configuration with an Exa API key.
Typical use: "Find recent benchmarks comparing Postgres and MySQL JSON performance and summarise them with sources."
Who it is for: anyone whose assistant needs current information from the web.
Notes: usable without an account with rate limits; an Exa API key (free tier available) raises limits and unlocks extra tools.
Tools (2)
web_fetch_exaRead a webpage's full content as clean markdown. Use after web_search_exa when highlights are insufficient or to read any URL. Best for: Extracting full content from known URLs. Batch multiple URLs in one call. Returns: Clean text content and metadata from the page(s).
web_search_exaSearch the web for any topic and get clean, ready-to-use content. Best for: Finding current information, news, facts, people, companies, or answering questions about any topic. Returns: Clean text content from top search results. Query tips: describe the ideal page, not keywords. "blog post comparing React and Vue performance" not "React vs Vue". Use category:people / category:company to search through Linkedin profiles / companies respectively. If highlights are insufficient, follow up with web_fetch_exa on the best URLs.
